 Grandma's Words
A poem written for my cousin to recite at our Grandmother's funeral.

GRANDMA'S WORDS

When I was little, she dried my tears,
She did my hair all up in braids,
She put to rest my childish fears,
She taught me not to be afraid,

She loved me just the way I was,
She never hurt or criticized,
We were always very close, because
My Grandma was so wise,

I would talk--and she would listen,
She'd never judge or lead me astray,
She taught me to dream, and keep on wishin',
So I wrote this poem for her today.

Through the years, whatever occurred,
In me, emotions she always stirred,
Her voice was all I ever heard,
Oh, I remember Grandma's words,

"You don't owe anything, to anyone,
Don't let what they think make you frown,
Just live each day from sun to sun,
Don't let others get you down."

Grandma was sweet, but also tough,
Knew how to work and how to fight,
She raised four kids when times were rough,
Always saw through darkness to the light,

When I was fifteen, there came a day,
I wanted go-go boots and a mini-skirt,
Grandma put those boots on lay-a-way,
And sewed that skirt, though her fingers hurt,

She was always there, whenever needed,
To give advise, or an occasional loan,
She watched me grow, until I succeeded,
In making my way in the world alone,

Through the years, whatever occurred,
In me, emotions she always stirred,
Her voice was all I ever heard,
Oh, I remember Grandma's words,

"You don't owe anything to anyone,
Don't let what they think make you frown,
Just live each day from sun to sun,
Don't let others get you down."

As she grew older, we were closer still,
And I discovered where the world's troubles lay,
Too many mountains we make from molehills,
And there aren't enough Grandmas' now-a-days,

And when we laid Grandma to rest,
I remembered things she said now and then,
Like, "Everything happens for the best,"
and "Whatever goes around, comes round, again."

I hope that's true, and some fine day,
My kids have kids, who look to me,
And listen to everything I say,
And show me respect and dignity,

Through the years, whatever occurred,
In me, emotions she always stirred,
Her voice was all I ever heard,
Oh, I remember Grandma's words,

"You don't owe anything to anyone,
Don't let what they think make you frown,
Just live each day from sun to sun,
Don't let others get you down."

End
