THE GIRL I USED TO BE Whatever happened to The girl I used to be? So trusting and loving, So happy and carefree - It seems that time has brought Changes I don't understand; I used to believe in love And gladly gave my hand. A marriage made in Heaven Was what I dreamed about; Until the night he came home And knocked my senses out! For many years I endured The beatings and the pain - Then one day I got away; Never to go back again. Yet I still lived in fear That he might someday come Back to carry out his threats To kill me, but it's done. He killed the girl I used to be - Long before I got away; It took a long, long time Before I could ever say That I am getting better, And will learn, once again To become the girl I used to be; The girl who thought she'd win! Childhood dreams and memories Of rainbows after rain - Of happiness and sunny skies Without enduring pain. It took a lot of changing And friends to help me through; To overcome the heartaches, Start living life anew! The hope is stronger now That I am forever free; And you will be proud to know The girl I used to be.
