I can't tell you how many people I know
(How many girls, let's qualify this statement) Who have rejected you in the past And I don't know why - Because you walk through the rain to bring them flowers? Or bring smoothies to the sickest of your friends? Because your three favorite words are "How are you?" Or your desire to become a president one day? Because you are smart, sweet, sensitive and kind, And put everyone else's happiness before your own? You stood there at the Homecoming game (They won't date you, but they'll name you prince) And talked to a mutual friend in the stands, Wearing the suit required for the halftime parade Of all the class royalty, And you looked good, though no one really noticed: You had gel in your blond hair And a smile on your face And a relaxed stance, but interested, but informed, And a glow in your eye I could see from a distance That's it - those girls are wrong about you (It started in looks, does that make me shallow?) It can't be because of your personality that they refuse you But they haven't seen you in this light And now I have I may be the only one who has But I have, and I know one day it will be your turn All that we share, the rejections unfounded, I'm still here, so like you, so like you, Waiting for you in the shadows
