Piano Man
I'm sorry, Billy Joel!

Sing us a song, you're the piano man
Sing us a song tonight
'Cause we're all in the mood for a melody
And you've got us feeling all right

did they tell you this is what you'd get?
behind the keys in a smoky bar
hoping for the change to fall
         did they tell you
         this was all?

you sing for the gang, you cry, you croon
your fingers dart over silky keys
black to white to black again
         jazz piano
         but no friends

Sing us a song, you're the piano man
Sing us a song tonight
'Cause we're all in the mood for a melody
And you've got us feeling all right

did they tell you you'd grow old and gray
before you get to the dream you crave?
did they warn you of your fate?
         you could make it -
         but too late

blues carry an extra ring of truth
through the smoke in the bar, through your voice
all the chances that you've had
         did they say it
         wasn't bad?

Sing us a song, you're the piano man
Sing us a song tonight
'Cause we're all in the mood for a melody
And you've got us feeling all right

did they say you'd signed your life away?
you'll never wash off the alcohol
the scent will haunt you always
         till the closing
         of your days

if you can get by with your life here
if the pain in your soul is okay
         then stop the idle dreaming
         start with the dis-
         believing
