She was only seven years old
And he was just barely ten;
She thought that he was handsome
And she told him now and then:

At ten years old he was not
Prepared for love of any kind;
She tagged along everywhere
And drove him out of his mind!

War had started up again and he knew
Just what must be done.

The little girl was eighteen now

He had just began to notice her
And smiled a time or two.

He met her after school was out,
On her graduation day;
Dressed up in his sailor suit
For he was going away.

They kissed goodbye tenderly
And then he walked away -
Tears in his eyes she couldn't see;

The seas were rough, the ship was tossed,
Some thought it would go down;
He thought of the little girl
Back in his old hometown.

He wondered if she'd wait for him,
It might be too much to ask of her;
He wished that he'd known then
The way things really were.

The mighty ship gave up the fight
And many men were lost;
Down to the bottom of the sea
They paid the highest cost.

The little girl has now grown old,
Yet she walks along the shore;
Thinking of her one true love
That she would see no more.

Late one night she thought she saw
A ship out on the sea;
How could she believe it?
Oh no, it couldn't be!

In a twinkling of an eye
As she sat down to rest;
A gentle hand reached for her,
'Twas the one that she loved best.

Two spirits met that dark night
And now walk on through eternity;
