MAMMA NEVER TOLD ME

Daffodils waving in the breeze
On a hot and humid day -
I ran and laughed and sang;
Just a child at play.

It was just a perfect world
In my little country town;
I didn't know that I'd be hurt
Before the sun went down.

Mamma never told me,
And I really didn't know
That there were people in the world
Who'd stoop so very low.

I used to sit on daddy's lap
And give a hug and squeeze
I knew that daddy loved me,
As he bounced me on his knees.

Grandpa Jones was full of fun
And teased me quite a bit;
But they were all just family
And they knew when to quit.

But mamma never told me
There was trouble in our town;
That someone had hurt a child
Then he just threw her down.

Out in the field, I saw a man
Who waved and smiled at me;
He walked over, said hello
Then grabbed ahold of me!

I cried, I screamed; it didn't help
For he soon had his way'
I felt so dirty and ashamed
And wished to die that day!

The sheriff came and said
"I think we've got the man"
It should have made me happy
But I didn't understand.

For Mamma never told me;
All my life I've paid the cost
For all the hurt and hating
Of the innocence I lost.

I heard just the other day
That wicked man had died;
If he could die more than once,
Then I'd be satisfied.

I bear the pain and memory
But I swear my child will know
For her mamma will tell her;
Because I love her so.
