Sojourn In The Paradise Garden I once glimpsed a Paradise Ere unseen by mortal eyes, Where people harvested the corn, Or sat and whiled away the morn. Lovers lay amongst the wheat And drank of passion's nectar sweet, Others laughed while gathering rye, And pitched their crops on wagons high. They worked at will, or took their ease, No-one but themselves to please Pleasure ruled the Summer day, Theirs to use or dream away. Maidens flirted with their swains To steal a kiss behind hay-wains. Youth was king, away with care! I would have stayed forever there. Then I awoke, and left the scene The Paradise from where I'd been. Never more its joys to find, Until I leave this world behind.
