 Has Oprah Lost Her Mind?
Why didn't Oprah focus on who really mattered?

Remember, this is just my own opinion, and as a victim of sexual abuse by a woman who remains free, I have very strong opinions about childhood abuse, in any form. I've also posted this on Oprah's website, in her message board dedicated to this show specifically. My handle there is exp_writer. I've been reading some messages posted there, and I can tell you without a doubt, that many people are almost as sickened as I am by this show yesterday.

Did you watch Oprah on 25 Feb, 2003? It was titled:

Is There A Child Molester In Your Neighborhood?

Oprah's guest today was your friendly neighbor next door... a convicted child molester. While I certainly like and respect Oprah, and I do watch her show frequently, I was stunned that she would pull a stunt like this. God, are we slipping backwards? Oprah sat and talked with this man like he was an equal, as if he was just an ordinary man with whom to shoot the breeze.

He was the sole guest, although there were clips of families protesting against having child molesters residing in their neighborhoods, and a few parents she brought to the show, but she sat them in the audience. Hooray for them... and for their measly few minutes of fame. They deserved the stage, not him. This child molester commanded a full 40 minutes of the hour, while there were several families with clips that got a minute or two each. Barely long enough to say I have a child molester living next door to me!

Oprah seemed perturbed at one particular woman who found out she had 5 child molesters within a 6 block radius of her home! She had about 2 minutes to speak from the audience, and just when she was getting upset, (rightfully so; wouldn't you be too?), Oprah went to a break.

And the victims! She had a group of 5 or 6 victims in a room together who barely got a few sentences each to themselves! They were not even seen until after the second half of the show.
Excuse me? These parents and victims deserve to be heard!! I would very much like to know who it is that thought this child molester deserved even a second of our time, let alone be on the most popular talk show on the air. Some of us could have used that hour very wisely and productively. Some of us are survivors who wouldn't have minded for someone to hear our story!

Why is it that this child molester's story is more important than mine? Why is this abusers story more important than the millions of children and adults in this country alone, who have been abused? Why is it that abusers and molesters have a plethora of rights, while victims/survivors have absolutely none? We didn't ask to be hurt and abused. But the abusers chose to hurt us and abuse us, and they get to be on a talk show? They get to serve a fraction of the jail time they should serve, and then walk? They deserve to be set free after one, three, five or ten years, and get jobs that decent, moral law abiding citizens cannot get? They live in nice houses, can get credit cards, good jobs, are free to come and go as they please; basically, live the life that we have the right to live. Our lives, or part of our lives have been taken away forever by our abusers. We live in our own private tormented prisons serving a life sentence for a crime we did not commit! No one answers to that, nor do we have any closure.

Victims are not heard!!

Abusers get to walk right back into their lives, nice as you please, like they never left. I am furious about this show, and what it reminds me of as far as abusers and their rights. Abusers get their therapy bills paid; victims and survivors have to pay their own. Abusers get a free conscience; victims and survivors live in torment for life. Abusers are heard; victims and survivors are shunned, ignored, ridiculed and called liars. Abusers live carefree lives; after all, they enjoy the power they get from abuse, and they are allowed to continue to do what they like. Victims and survivors struggle every day to have a life.

Excuse me, but what's wrong with this picture? Wake Up, America! You're sending entirely wrong messages to child molesters. Basically, you're sending the message that they'll do a little time, maybe, and go right back to living how they please.

My own abuser is up in New York State right now, living in a nice town house, driving a new vehicle every few years, living the good life, free as a bird.

She should be in a jail cell, driving a mop bucket, and chained up. She also should take this burden that she gave me back. I don't want it, and I never asked for it. It's not right that I gave 23 years, so far, of my life up trying to come to terms with what she did to me.
It's time for her to pay the piper. And this time, the piper is me.

I should be at peace. I deserve that much at the very least. I've done absolutely nothing to hurt her, or my other abusers. I was a child!! So why am I living in constant pain and fear because of the sick choices they made? I never made those choices, they made them for me. And man, they were most certainly all the wrong choices. And they have the nerve to call themselves adults?
