Trivial Pursuits

He loves me, see?
This is my promise ring!!

Into my skeptical face
she thrusts the gold-plated ring
that will soon turn her finger green
with the cubic zirconium stones
begging me
without words …

         see?
                   SEE?
                             SEE?

Don’t you see what I see?

I rein in my snort of derision
at the cheap bauble,
yet another reminder
of his trifling “love”
begging her
without words …

         see?
                   SEE?
                             SEE?

Don’t you see what I see?
