The Memories of Mother’s Love A Sonnet My mother began to develop Alzheimers about 15 years ago. She passed away on May 15, 2003 at the age of 87. For the last two years she was bedridden, and did not remember us, nor could she carry on a conversation. This sonnet recalls her better days and eventual passing. You went away though not in haste, As still I sang of our joys past, Savoring your mem’ry still I taste, The love song that was our last. The song you sang to me years ago, When first our song had just begun, Lyrics only a mother would know, And we were joined in song as one. As time passed your song grew weak, The gold of youth was tarnished and old, Still I sang though you did not speak, Now all is silent, your voice is cold. Your song ended, yet my soul fill, For in my heart, your melody lingers still.
