CIRCUS MONKEYS
Chapter 15 My dad woke me up the next morning, just by a slight knock on my door. I didn't need anything else. I was up and asking him how Josh was before he could say so much as 'Morning'. "He's going to be ok, and he wants to see you." He smiled slightly. I felt my heart come back to me from Hong Kong, take some of the energy from the Earth's core, and soar back to my chest. It was wonderful. "Where is he?" I asked, attempting to push past my dad. He kept me back though and gave a look toward my pajamas. "First, you are putting on some civilized clothes." He gave me a look and I rolled my eyes. Ok, so the pajama shorts were a little baggy and the shirt was kind of see-through, but who cares?! Yet with another look from my dad, I nodded and grabbed some clothes from the top of a pile and leapt into the bathroom. I was ready only a few seconds short of my record set on the day Josh woke me up for the cotton candy. What can I say? No matter how much I care for Joshua, sugar is still first on my list. Now, if my dad would have said 'Josh wants to see you and give you cotton candy...' then I would have gone into Guinness. My dad told me to go to the little health trailer where Joshua would be and I soared out of the trailer. I ran to the building, painted with red and white stripes, and jumped up the steps. I was about to fling open the door when there was a voice to the side of me. "Lory." I looked over and standing on the side of the trailer, was Joshua. "Josh!" I squealed and ran over to him on the side. I was about to throw myself on him and give him a great big bear hug - but I restrained. "Can I touch you?" I asked and he laughed. "So long as you don't touch me too hard." I beamed and gave him a great big hug, but I didn't squeeze too much. I felt my smile get even wider as he wrapped his arms around me. I didn't want to break the embrace but I just had to talk to him. I stood back and looked at him. Of course he was looking amazing, but I was surprised he didn't seem more, well, hurt. "How are you?" I asked, it was kind of dumb but it was the only way I could phrase it. He just smiled. "Pretty good actually. They told me I had a concussion and my neck is pretty badly sprained. My back is nice and sore and my hands are a little burned." He held out his hands and I could see where they were red from sliding down the rope. I took a sharp intake of breath. "Ah, it looks worse than it feels," he said. I pursed my lips, giving him a look. "You bum! Can't you just say 'Ow, it hurts!'? Always trying to be a martyr aren't you?" I asked, moving forward slightly. He grinned. "Hey, what did I tell you? I'm the savior of the circus!" He did his best to move into a superman pose but I waved it away. It just wasn't working when he couldn't turn is neck or move his back. I just looked at him happily for a moment before he had to break the little bubble. "I've already talked to Tanya." Even though the two of us had now befriended each other I still couldn't stop my smile from dropping when I heard that she had seen him before I did. He "tsk"ed and put his hand on my shoulder. "Now, don't look like that. She came over on her own before I was even up. I called for you specifically." He looked at me with caring eyes and I just couldn't help but smile. "Ok, so...?" I asked, wondering why he brought up Tanya. "She told me how you ran out next to me when I fell." I felt my cheeks get hot. I broke the eye contact with him. I guess I didn't expect that to come up. "Yeah...well..." "She also said that you were yelling at me." I felt myself burst out with laughter, taking my eyes back to his. I put my hand over my mouth, memories suddenly floating back to some of the mean things I said. I responded between giggles. "Well! You deserved it! You weren't supposed to fall like that and scare me half to death." I grinned up at him and he too laughed. I felt my heart swell. "Plus, you didn't even let me talk to you before you went out there. He faked being mad. "Well, you should have gotten there sooner to tell me whatever you were going to tell me! To apologize to me!" My anger was slightly less faked. "Apologize? How did you know that I was going to do that? Both of us need to apologize for that argument, not just me." I looked up at him, studying his eyes. "Plus, that wasn't the only thing." He raised an eyebrow. "It wasn't?" I shook my head, and felt my palms to start to get sweaty. This was it. "I was going to tell you...that I really really like..." Oh for crying out loud Mallory! Just say the one word that you want to, you chicken! "...maybe even love you." Close enough. I looked up to him and made eye contact. In that instand, I know saying love was the right thing to do. It was really the word that fit. He didn't seem to mind my fumbling. He took his hand from my shoulder and brought it up to my face tenderly. "If my neck weren't so sore I would..." He started softly but I interrupted. "It's ok, I will." I took myself up to the tip of my tippy-toes to make myself just his height. I placed my hands carefully on his toned shoulders and leaned in slowly, connecting. The kiss was short, but oh, so sweet. I lowered myself back to my regular height and opened my eyes, smiling timidly. His grin was wide, and he leaned forward as far as he could, kissing my lightly on the forehead. "So, I guess you won't be performing for a while, hu?" I asked, taking both of his hands in mine. He shook his head. "Nope, I'll have to wait until everything on me heals. I'll probably need someone take care of me..." He said suggestively. I snorted. "Take care of you? You better not be looking to me, boy!" He pulled himself up from leaning on the side of the trailer and looked exasperated. "You said I should just say 'Ow, it hurts!' sometimes!" He exclaimed and I laughed. "Well, yes but I didn't mean for you to act like a baby about it!" I looked over to him and grinned, squeezing his hand gently. He rolled his eyes and we started walking. "So, what almost happened that night?" I asked slowly. He looked over at me. "Do you mean...?" "Yeah, I was just wondering if you ever figured out what almost happened that night...you know, when you gave me your sweatshirt..." I trailed off, trying my best to say everything without mentally stepping on his toes. He heaved a great big sigh. "Wow, you just don't let a guy live down anything do you?!" He asked and I grinned. "Nope."
