War In A Glass
the glass is never half-empty, for our want to fill it

         War In A Glass

steadily the line crawls to the altar
as one by one we tap ourselves in tax
to drain our lives into a crimson decanter
our shriveled husks strewn aside in stacks

our cup spilling over in mounting fervor
piled upon our plate with taint and tatter
until at last a freeman's will should falter
and none of our endless sacrifices matter
