Aftermath
I ache to the core

There are no more tears -
the well is dry
and all that is left
is an ache so deep,
so profound,
I can barely breathe.

Words were spoken
not heard -
accusations flying,
reason lost.

who are you?
how did we get here?

In the aftermath
the pain is so intense
it has taken up residence
in my heart
and will not leave.

I begged you to trust me -
yet you insisted
and pushed ahead,
breaking this fragile peace
that was already so precariously balanced
on the thin edge of my sanity.

who are we?
what will become of us?

And now
there are no more tears -
the well is dry
and all that is left
is an ache so deep,
so profound
I can barely breathe.
