Healing the Darkness
Based on St. John, Chapter 9

As Jesus walked to the temple that day,
A blind man appeared along the way,
The disciples wondered why he was blind,
Sin! Is that what caused him to be so inclined?
They said we don’t know why he suffers thus,
Sin causes suffering is what was told to us.
His parents? Or could it be his sin
While still in the womb, closed within?
Did he curse God before his bones formed?
Or think impure thoughts ere he was born?

No, his sin did not cause his plight,
But so God’s glory could take flight.
And with a mud poultice of spittle and dirt,
Jesus anointed his eyes without any hurt,
Go wash in Siloam whose name means Sent,
And with his stick in hand, hurriedly he went.
Leaping into the pool his faith overflowed,
Returning with sight to see the one he owed.
Others looked curiously as he walked about,
They gathered in groups and began to shout.

He’s the one! He once sat with folded legs,
How is he running about and no longer begs.
How did it happen, how does he now see?
Go ask the Rabbi, the Priest or a Pharisee.
They questioned his family about his sight,
His father ducking the spotlight,
Said go ask my son, he’ll speak the truth,
He’s of age, he’s no longer a youth.
Their questions he answered to their chagrin,
And they cursed him and accused him of sin,

Do you know a blind man given his sight?
Who can do that? he asked oh so quiet.
But they said this healer was no man of God,
And your words, said he, seem quite odd,
For you are religious, but you are abase,
Because you do not know this healer of grace.
Accursed are you, the leaders did intone,
And they cast him from the faithful, all alone.
Without the temple, the recipient of a cruel gift,
Cast into the world, they had set him adrift.

Wandering about, searching where to turn,
The lesson from God he was trying to learn.
And then at the temple, he saw the Prince of peace,
And without his knowing, his wandering did cease.
Jesus asked if he believed in the Son of Man,
Who has for you an eternal plan?
I know him not, but I would truly like to,
That I might express to him my gratitude due.
For he showed me love and shattered my night,
And by his grace gave me the gift of sight.

Though I was blind, but now I can see,
And those once seeing are now like me,
Stumbling around in the darkness of sin,
Enclosed in night that has trapped them within.
