THE LIGHTHOUSE

Many, many years ago,
This tale was told to me
About a ship and its crew
And its plight at Donnaree.

In the darkness the ship floundered
As the storm became much worse;
And from the Captain came a cry
Which sounded like a curse.

Fear struck hearts as they tossed about
As the ship began to creak and moan;
Eighteen men all thinking thoughts
Of their loved ones back at home.

All hope was almost gone,
The men prepared to die;
When in the distance they saw
A light upon the sky.

The Captain turned his craft
And headed towards the light
Strong the storm but stronger still
His will to live that night.

The crew shouted as they saw
The lighthouse far away,
They knew if they could reach it
They would see another day.

Soon the storm was behind them,
And shore was just in sight;
Cheers filled the darkness
They'd made it home all right!

In the morning, they looked about
But nowhere could they see
The lighthouse and it's said
That it could never, ever be.

No lighthouse ever stood
Upon the rocky shore and yet,
It shown so bright that stormy night
That no one could ever forget.

Strange things happen out at sea,
Stranger tales have been related;
The ghostly lighthouse tale
Has been oft-times debated.

But I believe in miracles
And I guess I always will -
Whenever I see a lighthouse
The memory haunts me still.
