The moon hadn't quite set as Kaie roused Ardra. Speaking in hand signals, the two girls broke their scanty camp and hefted their packs. Kaie cautioned Ardra that they would need to be quiet since they were in the center of Majay held territory. They had separated from the others a few days prior in order to get a better look around.

Well used to moving at night due to her typically nocturnal habits, Kaie was in charge of this expedition. Ardra concentrated on following her lead and not accidentally setting something on fire.

Ardra followed Kaie carefully, trying not to trip over a root in the dark. The girls moved down the slight incline, leaving the cover of the overhang they had huddled under during the day.

They were about a third of the way down the hillside when they literally fell over the patrol.

Kaie rolled as she tripped over a man and came up, a knife held point first in her hand. She threw it and dived aside. Ardra drew her own dagger as she sprawled in the dirt. She had fallen face first when she tripped. Rolling to her side, she nailed the soldier coming at her dead center with the dagger she had pulled as she fell.

She dived towards the body scrambling to retriever her dagger as Kaie dispatched two more soldiers with thrown knives.

Ardra finally wrenched her dagger free from the head of her victim and turned in time to duck under the swinging attack of the second to last solider.

Kaie used her attacker's momentum to toss him over her shoulder and cried to Ardra, "Fire would be good now!"

Ardra slammed the hilt of her dagger into her soldier's head and answered, "I don't have that much control yet, Kaie. I might set you on fire."

Kaie dived to her side and tripped the soldier. "I don't bloody well care right now. I'm about to be skewered." The soldier had managed to draw his sword but wasn't very accurate with it in the dark. Kaie thanked Methos for that as she dodged the wildly swinging sword.
Ardra had managed to temporarily knock out her attacker but the man was already stirring. She tossed her dagger at Kaie, trusting the thief to catch it. Looking down at her hands, she called fire to them.

The clearing burst into flames seconds later.

Kaie dived under one last swing as the soldier burst into flames. She grabbed her knives from the bodies around her and barreled towards Ardra. Fire rung the clearing they had been fighting in and Kaie saw no way out.

Ardra turned glowing yellow eyes towards her. "Now what?" the young Majay asked in shock.

"Run like Niurin!" Kaie shouted. She grabbed Ardra's hand and dove through the spot where the flames seemed weakest.

Scrambling to their feet, the two girls ran for their lives.
