LAKESIDE MEMORIES
Seated by the placid lake, Mind wanders back in the past, When he had admired my eyes, Now melancholic, downcast. It is as if yesterday, He met me and went away. At the moment of parting, He had simply this to say: “I have got to go afar, I am called by distant shore. Our meeting was like a dream, Don’t think of it anymore.” As he spoke he was so calm, Not a wrinkle on his face. No hesitation in voice, Not the tiniest grimace! Almost mechanically, For a moment he came near And kissed me without seeing That in my eyes shone a tear. My tears silently mingled With the waters of the lake, I sat sobbing through the night, Dark shadows turning opaque. It’s a pity that a girl May love her fiancé much But he may treat her feelings In a flippant manner such! * Written in abcb 7-7-7-7 format * Honourable mention prize in TRADITIONAL POETRY CONTEST, "TRADITIONAL POETRY CONTEST" M C Gupta 27 June 2003
