MEMORIES—a ghazal
My heart is in shock today. I have mental block today. Rolled back in the march of time Is my mental clock today. In winding memory lane, I so want to walk today. Of my gain or loss in life, Let me check the stock today. Memories bitter and sweet, In my mind do flock today. Bitter, I wish forgotten; Sweet only I lock today. With a pounding throb I heard, In my heart a knock today. Let my feelings take the lead, Let wisdom be mocked today. I suffered silence so far, Why, Khalish, then talk today? * Written in 7-7 format * The word Khalish included in the last couplet is the pen name of the poet. Such inclusion is a common practice in classical ghazal writing. Khalish is an Urdu word meaning ache or pain. * For a detailed note on ghazal, please see "WHAT IS A GHAZAL AND HOW TO WRITE IT?"
