MORNING CLINIC - A HAIBUN

It's almost like clock-work! Daily morning, I reach my clinic, i.e. my consulting rooms at about eleven o'clock. There is little time to speak to the receptionist or do anything personal. I quickly arrange my table as per my preferences, and cast an eye all around and see:

Toys and toffees mixed
With illnesses and crying
In the waiting room.

The patients come in one by one. Some have minor, and some, major illnesses. The fees are satisfactory, yes, but even more heartening is the gratitude of parents and their wards' smiles!

Shyam with severe mumps,
Reem has typhoid and Ram, cough,
Many ailments here ...

Different patients receive different interventions. Some need to be prescribed medicines, while a few need injections, or inhalation by nebuliser; some are just fine and have come for a well-baby check-up and/or vaccination.

This boy gets a shot
That girl will get admitted
And this one's just fine!

After two and a half hours of this routine, my mind is also jammed, and soon, I must wind up and go home for much needed rest!

Morning's now over,
Well, I shall soon return home,
To a quiet small lunch

Such is a Pediatrician's morning. In between cases, sometimes we do get time to listen to music or to read Harry Potter!
I shall end here with this last haiku, a summary:

Yes, the grind goes on,
Illnesses, shots and check-ups,
My small story's done.
