This poem was written for a contest. It received Honourable Mention in Lexi's Poetry Challenge..round three

It is based on the words my brother spoke the final weeks of his life. He lost his life after a courageous battle with cancer.

Living On Borrowed Time

Living on borrowed time
Listening to each hour on the clock chime
Drifting in and drifting out
Wondering what life has been all about

Trying to say the words
Words that long ago should have been said
Like I love you, I'm sorry
Or thank you for being my friend

Hanging on with all your might
Wondering if this will be your last night
Praying to God to forgive your sins
Pleading to have time to makes amends

Listening to the minutes tick away
Hoping you will see another day
Yet so filled with such severe pain
Wishing you would not see another one again

Putting on a brave face
Crying inside with tears that are hidden
Holding hands with the ones that you love
Knowing things you could have done, but didn't

Thinking of how time
Has passed so slowly by
And wondering why it has quickened
Now that the time is near for you to die

Remembering the little things
Like the smell of a beautiful rose
The memory of your first kiss
Or the way you decided to propose

Walking down the aisle
Taking your marriage vows
Recalling each of your childrens birth
Wishing you didn't have to leave this earth

Living on borrowed time
Listening to the clock chime
Makes you realize each day that you live
Might well be your last

So don't wait for borrowed time
It can come when you least expect
Remember to treat every one good
Knowing you did the best you could
