How to Get an ISBN # in Canada

In Canada contact:
The National Library of Canada
395 Wellington Street
Ottawa, ON
Phone: (819) 994-6872 Fax: (819) 997-7517
Email: isbn@nlc-bnc.ca

The National Library of Canada is the official Canadian ISBN Registry. The application process is simple and FREE of charge.

Here's How:

1. You can send an email to isbn@nlc-bnc.ca with your fax number and/or mailing address to request that one be sent to you.

2. Or you can complete the online application at URL: http://www.nlc-bnc.ca/isbn/

3. Or you can mail request for a form to: Canadian ISBN Agency, National Library of Canada, 395 Wellington Street, Ottawa ON, K1A 0N4 Canada

4. You need a Canadian address to receive a Canadian ISBN. U.S. publishers looking for a bargain are out of luck.

5. Each format or binding must have a separate ISBN (i.e. hardcover, paperbound, VHS video, laserdisc) A new ISBN is also required for a revised edition.

6. Once assigned, an ISBN can never be reused.

Tips:

1. If you only send your mailing address, you will likely get a response asking for your fax number. You can avoid this step by letting them know you do not have one in your original email.

2. If you have emailed during regular business hours, you should have a response within a few hours.

3. Fill out the form neatly. Include as many titles as possible on the form. The longer the list, the larger the block of numbers you will be given.

4. Fax the form back to the National Library at (819) 997-7517. (n/a if doing online process)

5. You will receive your block of ISBNs and instructions on how to use them within a month.

What do I do with it once I have it?

The ISBN should be printed on the copyright page, and on the lower right hand corner of the back cover of your book in a font size between 9 and 12 points. If you're using a dust jacket, the ISBN should also be on the upper edge of the left hand flap. If your product includes a disk or cassette, the ISBN should be printed on the label.

Every edition of your title should have a separate ISBN number. A hardcover copy should have a different ISBN than the soft cover. An audio version should have a different number again. If you change the cover of your book, or if you make significant changes to it, you should use a new ISBN.
