The wedding ring represents the binding of two lives - man and wife. If God is part of their lives, it's a binding plus One. If there is a child or children, it's a binding plus two or plus three, etc. Only remember, God is the thread that holds it all together. Maybe the following poem will help you explain the love God creates for families to any step-children. Please feel free to use and adapt it if you like, only keep my name attached (the imagery is a "braided" wedding ring, but you can use a necklace charm, if that works best).
This is a story for you to know How God has made our family so. Each twine you see upon this ring Represents a living Being. The first is me with life so bare And all the love I had to share. The second you and sister, too,* Who needed me like I did you. The third is Papa, with God's grace,+ Who gave you to my warm embrace. But, one more thread here do I see Woven in betwixt the three. This last one is our saving Lord Who gave to us a daily chore To trust Him, daily, with our best And on His loving strength to rest. *This line can be changed, if there is only one child, to read The second you who, as God knew, Had need of me like I did you." or simply change gender as needed. +Change "Papa" to "Mama" as needed
