the nightly symphony

the nightly symphony

as the inky blackness of sunset
closes its curtain about the shoulders of the world
there ascends to the pulpit of the night
a cacophony of sound
rambunctious in its nature
as if
life were only one long night of wassail
their symphony springs forth the same every night
yet mutable
for they sing without a score
joining the chorus as they desire
with abandon they burst forth with music
and put on airs before any who question their performance
and as the countless ages pass me by
I shall never understand the cipher
that destines their nightly journey into song
