Evil has existed from the beginning of time. Before man existed, Evil walked this Earth. It watched patiently while Volcanoes spewed their fire and lava into the air. It felt the Earthquakes that ripped the landmasses into continents. And when the oceans settled and the sky turned blue and began to fill with white wisps of clouds, Evil breathed the first sweet air that formed around this green and luscious planet.
Evil waited. The plants and flowers that grew wherever the Earth would allow were passive. Evil’s footsteps left no mark. The animal life that emerged was a bit more interesting. While many of the animals that wandered the Earth could be vicious, none knew fear or terror, only survival. Evil walked among the animals but they hardly felt its presence.
Then, one day, evil spotted a new creature. He was weak and fragile. He had neither claws nor teeth sufficient to defend himself against the multitude of beasts that existed in his world. Evil laughed. Evil moved closer to examine this creature doomed to extinction even as it was born and man turned away in fear. Fear. Evil held the man and, though he trembled, he looked at Evil and then Evil backed away. For in this weak and trembling creature, Evil saw the spark. The spark that would make this creature strong. The spark that would allow this creature to own this world. Evil sighed.
Oh, but Man was a glorious creature to watch. He learned. He built tools so he could eat. He built tools to defend himself. And then he turned the tools on himself. Evil rejoiced.
Then Man began to change the world around him to suit his whims. So Evil touched Man and there was greed and envy and hate. But Evil was not triumphant.
Man fought against Evil. Man was not going to give up this world gently. Evil whispered in Man’s ear and there were wars. Evil gathered groups its forced and battered Man’s resolve but, more often than not, Evil was defeated. Evil became confused. For every hideous sight Evil created, Man built a dozen things of beauty. When Evil caused Man to cry out in pain, Man created laughter and song to sooth the pain. So Evil crawled away in despair and sought out the deep, comforting darkness.
In that darkness, Evil listened and, while much of what Evil had created continued, Man continued to resist. Despite his fear, Man rallied against Evil’s lingering influence. Perhaps Man’s own horror wasn’t enough, he needed to see Evil. So, in the darkness, using the Earth itself, Evil fashioned a new creature. A creature that would walk among Man unnoticed. A creature that Man would trust. And Evil became one with that creature.
Evil stood upright and walked out of the darkness into the light. But this creature had been formed from matter that had never known light and Evil felt pain. Evil retreated into the shadows and waited for the night to come.
When the sun went down, the pain subsided and Evil walked among men. This new creature looked like a man, moved like a man, but the eyes that gazed out at the world were not a man’s eyes. And when Man looked upon this creature he knew the eyes of Evil. And Man fled in fear and Evil became angry. He pursued but they shut their doors against Evil and Evil could not enter.
Evil began to feel an emptiness as he walked through the night alone. He was cold and alone and he began to grow weary. This vessel he had created was heavy and he remembered how effortlessly he had been able to move though the world. As he concentrated on the memory, he began to feel the lightness once again and Evil moved with the wind.
Evil realized there was a river nearby and almost before he could finish the thought, he found himself standing at the river’s edge. He looked down upon the moving water and he longed to know the feeling so he slipped his hand into the water. It was cool but it slipped by so softly, it was if nothing was there. Evil tried to pick up the water, but it escaped through his fingers and when he opened his empty hand he saw that the river had taken away pieces of his fingers. Evil gasped and fell to the ground. He dug his fingers into the ground, despairing at how fragile this body was. The emptiness began to gnaw at his insides and when he stood up, he saw that pieces of the freshly dug earth had replaced the parts of his hand that the river had taken away.
As Evil moved through the night, he happened upon a solitary traveler. As his movements were lighter than air, the traveler did not hear Evil’s approach. Evil reached out and put his hand on the man’s shoulder. When the man turned and looked into Evil’s eyes he began to scream and he struggled to break free of Evil’s grasp. But Evil held him tight and the man’s screams were hurtful to his ears. So Evil held him tighter and his eyes bore into the man’s mind, willing him to be silent. The man ceased to scream and he became still.
Evil felt the warmth of the Man’s skin and heard the beating of his heart. The emptiness was overpowering and his tongue touched his teeth. His teeth. The one thing he had taken from the animals so he would not be defenseless. Evil smiled as he sank his teeth into the neck of the traveler. He felt the life of the man pour into his veins. He felt his own body grow warm. And the emptiness began to subside.
When the emptiness had gone, Evil dropped the lifeless body of the traveler to the ground. He realized his skin was now soft and lifelike. The body at his feet began to move and he looked down for he was sure the traveler was dead. But the eyes opened and Evil gazed up at Evil.
And so it was, so long ago. I no longer count the days, the years or even the centuries. I have watched as Man’s evil began to out shine my own. From the first moment I saw him, I knew the human being would be a wondrous creature. And though he may rant and rave to the contrary, a piece of Me lives in all humans. Like a proud parent I watched as men routinely spread horror and mayhem throughout the world but I am most proud of my creatures of the night. Spawned from that solitary traveler, they are human and they are Me.
