Memory Lane

I knew that I was late
For the sky grew very dark
But I still couldn’t locate
What I’d left in the park.

Mom would surely scold,
Since I’d lost my shoe,
And I was getting cold.
I didn’t know what to do.
Then came the showers
Which wet my yellow dress.
I picked Mom some flowers,
But slipped. Oh, what a mess!

What would Mother say?
She was sure to be mad.
Why’d it happen this way?
She’d think I was oh, so bad!
So I thought I had no choice,
And I began to cry.
“Quack,” I heard a voice
Coming from nearby.

I turned ‘round to look
And saw an angry duck.
“This is my brook.
Why sit in all my yuck?”
He quacked aloud at me.
I’d never spoken to a duck,
Not one right by my knee!
“Ack!” I said. “What awful luck,
A scolding duck!” and I bolted up.
Without a word, I ran away.

Then Mom said, “Ah, my pup,
Where did you play?
You remind me so of me.”
She began to laugh,
Then brewed us tea,
As I took my bath.
I scrubbed my face
And washed my hair
And donned a gown of lace.
Then Mom began to share
What she had done at eight.
Outside the sky poured rain
While we opened the gate
That mom called Memory Lane.
