The Musical Performance

I remember that fateful day
The spring of forty-one
Aunt Fannie Mae was leading us
In a rousing glee club song

We sang about an earlier time
How boisterous was the sound
Adagio! She shouted
And hoped to slow us down

The audience was a jumble
They rolled upon the floor
And laughed at all our efforts
We couldn’t read the score

Aunt Fannie was a total mess
Her hair it stood like chaff
Too busy with the music score
To hear the people laugh

Then came that final stanza
That ended this great song
Aunt Fannie wanted volume
To end it really strong

Then it happened to our club
Embarrassment for all
No one knew the provocation
That caused this to befall

Fred would sing a cappella
Just a big old dumb redneck
But his pages were stuck together
By a tiny little speck

Affrettando! Approximento!
Shouting she did encour’ge
But her shouting had no effect
The spots were not deterged

She kept on shouting directions
As she waved her baton
Now lost in favorite music
In eras long bygone

Rigoroso! Largamente!
Now, legato! Largo!
As we sang our little hearts out
The tune of Old Black Joe
