An Ode on Extinction

A fire burns in the ancient forest ~
Smoke floats to heaven
Choking the gods,
Bringing tears to their eyes and
Echoes of voices which will
never be heard again;

Waves crash on long-forgotten shores ~
Filth-laden spray
Carrying slow death,
Silencing creatures of the deep and
Glimmers of mystery which will
never be seen again;

I am the wind sighing
through leafy treetops
where my children sing,

I am the river running
through forgotten canyons
where my ancient ancestors dwelled,

I am the voice of the voiceless ~
Hear my cry!
Whispers of sorrow
float on the winds of the world,
Ten thousand hearts cry for
shades of beauty
which will never be seen again.
