I Remember Zimbabwe
I will never forget your spectacular evenings When the sun paints the sky with an artist’s hand. Cool breezes brushing skin with a lover’s gentle touch, As the sounds of the night settle slowly over the land. Jacaranda trees with purple flowers in October, Flat-topped msasas spreading branches far and high. The sweet smell of Africa after the first rains fall, Rolling thunder clouds and lightening flashing in the sky. And the mighty Zambezi – the river slowly moving In an eternal journey towards a far distant sea. The humid sultry days, the sun burning the ground The moon and stars lighting up the night sky. Elephants and lions, giraffe and the hippo The animals that live in this unique place. Once they roamed free over fertile planes Innocent victims of a dispute blamed entirely on race. The people who still smile through such tragedy and fear Their eyes full of hope for a better life to come. While their families starve and their friends move away They look to their God, and they pray for freedom. I miss you, Zimbabwe, the land of my birth, And today my heart bleeds for your torment and pain. I pray that one day you may know freedom and peace, And take your rightful place in the world’s nations again.
