written on retreat at Gethsemene Trappist Monastery

I skirted Gethsemani’s doubt today
and took the broader, brighter way.
Left Him there on the rocky hill
to struggle alone with His Father’s will,
dreaming myself on a hero’s hill
while disappointing and slumbering still.
