The Troll
I am my own worst obstacle.

A simple bridge o’er rushing stream
is all that stands between
this rocky, rambling, wrenching road
and pastures lush and green.

Yet troll steps out and blocks the way
with gangly green-toothed grin.
“Turn back!” it snarls. “The likes of you
will never pass within!”

“Let me pass!” I boldly cry
my righteous forward plans,
as if by size and strength alone
I’ll get all my demands.

I rant and rave at obstacles,
yet never, ever see
‘tis fairy tale that I’ll prevail,
you see… that troll is me.
