Empathy Empathy is just one of our Savior's wonderful characteristics. It is the Mother of Compassion. Sadly in this cold, dark spiritual age many of us fail to use or practice it. Far too often it is easier for us to empathize with someone who we love or are close to, but what about those who, for whatever reason are considered failures, derelicts or just not worth bothering with? Way too often we ignore them. God empathized with, and offered a helping hand to us. He did this in spite of us being failures and derelicts. Many people have became very cold-hearted toward those who society no longer values. Far to often they are treated with derision, scorn or self righteousness. Many things that occurred in life has conditioned some to become what society might call human wrecks. Christ is full of empathy, for them, for us and for all mankind. It is a rough society out there! Millions of human beings have been and will be needing understanding and compassion. Although some people seem to be naturally full of compassion, generally it is not a human trait. By remembering the empathy, the compassion that God has extended toward us, might help us to extend it toward others, which characterizes the mind of Jesus Christ. Here is a poem or song which has been etched in my mind since I first listened to the words. I am not sure who the author was/is. It was sung by Hank Williams Sr. Men With Broken Hearts. "You'll meet many just like me, upon life's busy street. With shoulders stooped and heads bowed low, and eyes that stare in defeat. For souls that live within the past where sorrow plays all parts, for a living death is all that left, for men with broken hearts. You have no right to be the judge, to criticize and condemn, just think but for the grace of God, it would be you instead of him. One careless step, or thoughtless deed, and then the misery starts, and for those who weep, death comes cheap, these men with broken hearts. Oh so humble you should be when they come passing, by, for it's written that the greatest men never get too big to cry. Some lose faith in love and life when sorrow shoots her darts, and with hope all gone, they walk alone, these men with broken hearts. Some were paupers, some were kings, and some were masters of the arts, but in their shame they're all the same, these men with broken hearts. So help your brother along the road no matter where he starts, for the God that made you made them too, these men with broken hearts. If we want to change a situation, we first have to change ourselves. And to change ourselves effectively, we first have to change our perceptions. Author Unknown
