Prompt #4

*Right* Now that you have your main character description along with any conflict(s) he or she will be facing, I would like you to make a simple outline of your picture book. Here is an example:

I. Opening Page
         a. Introduce main character along with the conflict. Do not use too much detail as this is only the first page of your picture book.

II. Middle
         a. Describe 3 episodes your character will struggle with as he or she is striving to solve their conflict.
                   i. The 1st episode will fail.
ii. The 2nd episode will bring him/her closer to solving the problem.
iii. The 3rd episode will be the most challenging task, a real struggle.

III. What Will Your Character Achieve Through All This?
         a. You may decide whether or not your main character achieves his/her goal.
                   i. If the goal is not achieved, describe how the main character has been transformed.
ii. If the goal is achieved, describe how the main character has been transformed.

IV. Ending
         a. Summarize your main character’s growth
         b. Include your main character’s reaction to his/her achievement.
         c. Tie in the beginning of your story briefly as you end your book.

Remember this is only an outline. You may go back and make changes as often as you like. This is the skeleton of your story. If you are confused, please read the following example:

I. Opening Page
         a. Tommy wiped the sweat from his forehead. He did not enjoy sleeping in this strange new house. The unfamiliar noises scared him. Tears filled his innocent, blue eyes as he pulled the sheet over his head.

II. Middle
         a. Describe 3 episodes your character will struggle with as he or she is striving to solve their conflict.
                   i. Tommy calls for his mom, but she can’t here him.
ii. Tommy sings loudly under his sheets but the crashing and banging in his room get worse.
iii. Tommy hears heavy breathing near his bed and must decide if he should face the creature or continue to hide under his sheets.

III. What Will Your Character Achieve Through All This?
         a. You may decide whether or not your main character achieves his/her goal.
                   i. Tommy learns his imagination was only that—his imagination, thanks to his dog, Freckles.

III. Ending
         a. Scared in the beginning, more afraid in the middle, and relieved in the end.
         b. Tommy feels much better.
         c. Tommy was scared to sleep in his new bedroom for the first time. After much adventure in his imagination, he is relieved to know it was only his dog making the entire ruckus. Tommy and his mom make a deal that Freckles can sleep in his room until Tommy is use to all the unfamiliar noises in their new house.
