His Mother's Son & I

His Mother's Son & I

In dreams we stroll together, his mother's son and I
We speak of what's unanswered 'neath nature's muddled sky

His limbs are straight, untwisted, his voice is clear and strong
Like me his thoughts are lucid, like me he's right and wrong

A smile and laugh that's Jenny's and drives all cares away
His manner sweet and gentle as a newborn lamb's in May

But then my dreams are shattered, a guttural sound intrudes
From someone - someone near me - a need of life exudes

I turn my face from window and to the shape below
I grasp the rails upon the chair and down the hall we go

I ease the chair to toilet, tears of would be in my eyes
Assess the form before me and too hastily surmise
No thought, no recognition - but then I see his eyes

Their smile and laugh are Jenny's, their voice is clear and strong
They stride lovingly beside me and lift my heart to song

A song with added verses, for I now recognize
Me too within this lad - there's me within his guise

As clear as daily sunrise, as sure as life's intent
We're one, not one another, and now I know what's meant

Together - mother, father - and with us loved son
We'll seek out brighter future - united there be one

A path unclear before them, but path for them it be
To greater understanding, perhaps one day we'll see -

New growth of dad and mother - new horizons for their boy
Unleashing all within him - his talent, his wit, his joy

Through loving education for child and parents too
By caring folk who'll enlist them all in what is best to do

Fulfillment of joint wishes, each one that strengthens all
And, yes, an independence for mom, for dad,... for Paul
