Stupidity- a Rant by Quaddy
What the title says- a rant on stupid people.

Warning: This is probably going to offend someone. Frankly, I don't give a damn if I offend you. We're too easily offended nowadays, anyway. Thank you...and have a nice day.

First off, let me tell you that I am pro Corporal Punishment. And that I’m an eighteen-year-old girl from South Florida with Liberal tendencies, but a Conservative back-bone. My mother is an English teacher and my father works in the ever-disappearing computer industry (his job is currently one of many being sent over-seas to another country- probably India). I’m a freshman in college with a 3.644 GPA and aspirations to do something exciting when I get older.

Oh, and I deplore stupidity.

Not only do I deplore it, I hate the fact that society, especially with children, condones it. We cater to stupidity, blaming it on one mental disorder or the other. If someone we know does something utterly contemptible, we put it all down to them having forgotten to take their ‘meds’ that morning. Or that they had been having a really bad day. It doesn’t matter that what they do makes everyone around them uncomfortable or miserable, as long as they feel better at the end of the day.

America has long forgotten “E Pluribus, Unum.” This country is no longer about society as a whole, but about 300 million separate individuals all striving to make themselves comfortable and, in walking down that path, forgetting that they’re not more important than the person next to them. We forget that we’re only as important as the people we associate with and, instead of raising everyone, either fall to a lower level or leave everyone in the dust in our own missions of self glorification.

But that isn’t my point, is it? No, I’m here to write about the continuous decay over-taking today’s educational system. And how it all begins at home, with parents who think that every time their child does something wrong, it’s the teacher’s fault. “My child vandalized the school? Well, that’s not my problem- you’re his guardians for the day.” Yes, the school is your child’s guardian during school hours, but if your child is so stupid and crude as to deface a public building, than it’s a problem that you have to deal with as the parent. Obviously, there was something lacking in the child’s upbringing that no one at school can take care of. And, on top of that, parents become offended when teachers do try to take administrative action. “How dare you suspend my child!”

Parents…make up your minds, please. If the child does something wrong, you want the teachers to take care of it. But as soon as the teacher does take care of it, they’ve got lawsuits slapped down on the table in front of them. Stupidity is something that’s learned, as strange as that sounds, and it usually comes from the environment that they’re brought up in. So…stupid parents beget stupid children. And, in this society, stupid people are put up on a pedestal to be pitied and taken care of.

My mother teaches the ‘average’ children. Really, what this means is everyone who isn’t considered smart enough to be in the ‘advanced’ classes. And ‘advanced’ classes are generally made up of people who can add 2+2 and read “Run Spot Run”. Do the math…if you can.

You might wonder what the problem is. My mother is the teacher…it’s her job to teach. Well, when my mother tries to teach children who don’t want to learn, that’s a reflection on the environment that they were brought up in. Once again, stupidity comes to bite everyone in the ass. Just two days ago, two of her students (and these are 7th graders, mind you) were arrested for drug trafficking. And this is in an affluent neighborhood. These children are so damned spoiled that they think they can get away with anything. And do you know who the parents blamed for all of this?

Themselves?

That’s laughable.

They blamed, drumroll please, my mother because the children were arrested in her class. MY MOTHER was blamed for the stupidity of people. What the heck is this society coming to?

Wake up and smell the real world, people. Parents complain that TV is too ‘disgusting’ to watch. Well, if a show has cursing...and you don’t want your child to be introduced to cursing (which I can guarantee that they have anyway at school- ask them)- DON’T WATCH THAT SHOW, MORONS! Why should the rest of us be subjected to YOUR standards of decency? To your level of stupidity?

Sometimes, classes are arranged so that a few incredibly gifted children are placed in a class with absolute morons. Why, you might ask, would anyone do that? Simple. Administration believes that the morons will rise to the level of the gifted students.

Are you people really that naïve? It never works like that. The morons will stay morons. The only way these people will ever become anything other than morons is if education is enforced. And, oftentimes, parents don’t even know what a child does at school. They leave school to school. And when school tries to enforce school, parents run around screaming that their children are being ‘traumatized’. Yes, traumatized. I remember when parents used to side with the teacher on everything. And what about now? Now…teachers are called up and their jobs threatened because a child is failing their class and the child lied to their parents (to cover-up for their failing) that the teacher said derogatory things to them. Hell, my mom almost lost her job because she failed a kid one quarter. The kid had tried to turn in all the work the day before grades went in.

Yeah…EVERY SINGLE ASSIGNMENT…the day before grades went in. Some of these had been due for two-and-a-half months. Needless to say, my mother gave him 0s for everything more than two weeks late and late grades for everything up to two weeks (she was being generous). And the parent called in and complained, saying that my mother hated her child and was treating him like the red-headed step child or some crap like that.

You know what schools need? Beatings. We should definitely bring back corporal punishment. And parents would agree, too…unless it was their child about to be beat, of course. As long as it would only be ‘those hooligans’, beatings would be alright. Heaven forbid one of their little angels is one of ‘those hooligans’. Everyone knows that Hell hath no fury like a mother who believes her child is a perfect little angel. Oh, and yes, I would take a beating if I did something wrong, and I would take it gracefully…because that’s how I was raised. Good thing is, I would never get in trouble to need a beating. I respect the authority of teachers, knowing what Hell they all go through because I’ve experienced it with my mother’s Hell. She’s had a gun pointed her, lawyers screaming at her, and a principal that continuously sides with the parents…no matter how inane the situation.

Until parents realize that raising their children is their job and not a teacher’s, this country is going to continue going down the crapper. More individuals like the Ohio sniper or the two students arrested in my mother’s classroom will pass through the school’s doors. Hell, most of them will graduate because Math and English are no longer “must pass classes”. Students can fail Math, English, and Social Studies, but still pass the grade and matriculate on to the next level. Education is no longer about broadening one’s horizons and weeding out those individuals of special intelligence…it’s about making everyone feel equal. It’s about placating the stupid people. It’s about making sure the stupid people can pass standardized tests (though most don’t anyway). And it’s about making the individual feel good instead of ensuring the future of our society. Our country has become so obsessed with equality, that we’ve forgotten what equality really is.

We’ve forgotten how to be genteel, how to work with others gracefully. We’ve forgotten the rules of society and how to deal with society on a regular basis. We’ve forgotten that stupidity is not laudable. And we’ve forgotten that we must oftentimes make ourselves uncomfortable so that the others around us may remain in comfort. We’ve forgotten that to be different is wonderful, but to hinder others with that difference and not try to make ourselves better is not. To be at the base level is to get compassion from others, so we never try to rise out of our station and become better people. We stay where we are and expect others to adapt to us instead of ourselves adapting to others.

Like I said- society caters to stupid people.

So...let me ask...

Are you stupid?

Ok, people. I've gotten a lot of complaints saying that it's wrong to call people stupid. Not knowing something isn't being stupid- that's being ignorant of the situation. STUPID, in my mind, is having the ability and resources to learn and passing them up because it's too much work or too much of an inconvenience. Gods, people, what's with the PC overload?
