Remy felt the little footsteps approaching long before he saw their owner. He tried quieting his whirring motor and prepared to make his light shine brightly when his door was opened. He felt his temperature, thirty-nine degrees, perfect! His ice tray was full and the Frosty Pops were frozen to perfection; not a speck of freezer burn anywhere. Remy saw the child enter the kitchen and he ran straight to the fridge. The little boy left grape jelly and peanut butter fingerprints on the light beige front panel, but Remy didn't mind too much. He was an easy-cleaner-upper! "Mom, Mom! Can I have a Possicle?" The little boy excitedly asked. "No, you have to finish your sandwich first, Joshua." Mom shoo'd Joshua back toward the table in the other room, then "tisk'd" at the mess on the refrigerator door. "Poor, old Remington," said Mom, "Joshua gets you every day, doesn't he?" Mom cleaned the sticky prints from the door, then rearranged the magnets which were hanging there. When Mom opened the door, Remy made sure his bulb shined nicely on everything for her. She rummaged around for a bit before pulling out a package of meat for dinner, set it on the counter, then softly closed his door. Remy felt content. He had a good life here with Mom and Dad and even Joshua. Just as Mom was stepping out of the kitchen, Remy felt a "PING!" Mom stopped and turned around, listening intently. "What was that sound?" Remy was wondering about it himself! "PING! SPROICK! CHUGGA, CHUGGA!" Remy knew something was drastically wrong! He felt his motor slipping from its base, and the tube from the water dispenser was dangerously loose! Mom rushed to Remy's side and listened again. She had a worried look on her face, and knelt on her knees, looking underneath his catch pan. "Oh, no! A leak! You're leaking! And I see some screws and a bolt under here, too!" Mom scrambled up from the floor to get a towel down before the water began to spread. Just when Remy thought it couldn't get any worse, his soft whirring motor suddenly chugged to a halt. Remy felt horrible. His ice creams and Popsicles would surely melt if he didn't get his motor turning soon! He couldn't fill his ice trays up without the water line! He wondered if his light would even shine? Mom walked over to the phone and dialed a number quickly. "Hello, Dear. The Remington just crashed on us! What? Well, yes, I do! We have some roasts in the freezer, some frozen treats, the ice bucket." Mom tapped her foot on the floor as the voice on the other end spoke. "Turn it off? A new one? What about the water?" Remy listened intently. Oh, mercy! Mom was going to shut him off! Mom was going to get a new refrigerator! What's to become of me? What about my Popsicles? Remy wanted to scream, "NOOOOO!" Mom pulled the plug from the wall and listened as the chugging motor went dead. She finished sopping up the water from beneath the fridge, then took the whole wet mess into the laundry room. Remy couldn't see. He couldn't feel if his temperature was right or not. He knew something was going on, because there was a loud banging noise coming from his motor area. He had no energy. He could barely make out Mom's heavy sighs. Would he get the chance to say goodbye to Joshua, Mom, and Dad? Remy wondered where he would go to. A junkyard? He heard the toaster say once that the junkyard takes old appliances and squishes them flat! Remy didn't want to be squished flat. Wait! Something was happening! Remy felt himself being moved against a wall and a warm soft cloth was wiping down his sides. He felt his power cord connect to the plug in the wall, and as the energy rushed into him, he looked around. I'm still home! Mom and Joshua were staring at Remy. A strange man in overalls was also in the room. "Good as new, Mrs. Brenner. Just replaced the old motor with a new one and tightened up the water line for you." "Thank you, George, for coming out so quickly. Let me see you to the door." Mom and George left the room, but Joshua still stared at Remy. "I'n glad he fissed you, Remy, cause you make the bestest Possicles!" Joshua gave a quick pat on Remy's door, then ran off after Mom. I'm glad, too, thought Remy as he began sending cold air into his food compartments. ~The End~
