The Biography of Me Where to begin? Where to begin?? How about I answer a few questions that may hint at the world I live in. Q. Do you know the meaning of life? A. Ah, good question. I am glad you asked. The answer to that one would be 42. If you doubt me just look it up in Douglas Adams' Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy trilogy. Q. Let's try for a more down to earth question. How did you find this wonderful writing.com web site? A. I had someone ask me this just the other day, and I really don't remember what it was that brought me here. I had started one of the free accounts in January 2003 and had looked around a few times last year, but didn't really get involved until nearly June 2004. I now notice the lag time. I also realize the fun I was missing out on during that time. I should have opened the IM Console way back and got into scroll then. I have met so many wonderful people there and have seen the number of reads and reviews of my writing going up. Q. Well since you like it here so much, do you see yourself staying longer? A. That's almost answered itself. I think I will be sticking around for a long while. I want to get to know these new friends I have made better. I also want to meet more of the site members. There is also a real charge from people just reading my writing. I would like to see more reviews with ratings, but I am happy knowing people keep reading my writing. Q. Since you seem to like writing so much, what genres do you prescribe to? Are you dedicated to any one genre? A. Well, no, I am not dedicated to any specific genre. I will write nearly anything. Right now there isn't too much in my portfolio, but that will change over time. Just wait and see. Most of the time when I write I start out with a couple characters or a situation and it goes from there. I usually don't start off with a genre in mind. I am more concerned with how the characters react, how they change and become something different than they were before. Basically, I write along the same lines of what interests me to read. I like the characters to be pushed to that limit where they are not comfortable and have to adapt. Q. You talk a lot about what you read affecting what you write. Who are some of your authorial influences? A. I started off as a kid in the late 1970's reading J.R.R. Tolkien. I also was into reading comic books. When I was young I was a slow reader when I was young. To a certain extent today I am still a slow reader. What kept me reading were the story lines, the lives of the characters. I loved the Fantastic Four comic book series for it's flavor. It felt like a journey through the lives of the four characters. When something happened in one issue, it would affect the story ten issued further on. I felt like the characters had real lives. Later on I started reading longer books, mostly fantasy related. Compared to general fiction those are double, tripple or even have longer lengths. So, I went from short comic books to much longer fantasy. What kept me in them were the heroic deeds of the characters, especially when the main character was the underdog type. After fantasy I turned to Stephen King for a good scare. A friend tipped me off to a couple more horror writers who just blewn me away, they were H.P. Lovecraft, Clive Barker and Anne Rice. Since then I have gotten into nearly anything I put my hand on in a bookstore, but the only books that don't catch my intrest are biographies. Go figure. Some of those have the most character change imaginable. Q. Okay, this interview seems to be getting kind of deep. Let me ask a question not related to reading or writing. What is it you listen to? I mean, in music. Who do you like? A. Wow! That one has a large and short answer. I'll start off by saying I listen to nearly anything. The only musical genres I cannot live with though are country, both the old twangy stuff and the new pop country, and I really don't like rap or R&B too much. I grew up through the 1980's, so everyone expects me to like the 80's pop. It's not my favorite, though I did like the punk that came out of beginning of that decade. I really like The Clash, but I have not listened to them in a while. I also got into metal, like Metallica, who's my favorite. I really came into the music I like the most in the 1990's though, after I graduated high school. Most of it was grunge like Pearl Jam and Nirvana. To attempt to keep this answer short-er I will just say that I listen to a bit of classical, jazz, alternative rock, punk, techno of all flavors, grunge as I mentioned, metal too and pretty much anything else that is not the norm. I don't like the candy coated pop that bleeds from the radios anymore. I seem to be rambling a bit. I think I will take a break and come back to this interview when we both have some more time. It was nice meeting you, and I hope you will take the time to browse through my portfolio for a good read.
