Flair For Writing July Issue
Editor: Megan Rose Princess Megan Rose 10 Years
Assistant Editor: Angel Angel

Greetings Everyone! How is your summer going? It has been a little chilly in Indiana and rainy. I am going to Florida in two weeks to see my sister. I am looking forward to that. Angel is still making plans to move to Illinois. She is still in beautiful California for a little while, yet.

We are going to talk about writing historical fiction this month. I love the past and stories of the medieval times, 1800's Regency England stories. Sometimes, I think I lived before as a Princess in England! I want to see the movie King Arthur.I would love to be Cinderella and I could go on and on about this!
Wouldn't it be great if we could go back into the past and visit any time we want? We would have no problems writing historical fiction then! Unless we have a time machine or can go faster then the speed of light, we live in the present and can dream about being in the past by watching movies or reading books about long ago eras. So, with that in mind, let's get started.

It is important to be a story teller first, a historian second. You need to know about the era. This is important to plot and writing.
You will need to do research. If you have a lot of vacation time coming and the money, you can travel to England or the place where your story you're working on takes place. More then likely, you don't have the time or money to do this, so you surf the internet, read books about the past from the library, go to the musuem and find out what items existed back in the past. For instance, you wouldn't say the Princess is out walking by the pond talking on her cell phone. They didn't have cell phones back then in the medieval times of course. Prince Charming wouldn't show up on a harley to see his Princess{although my husband did before we became an item!}

If you are writing about 1912, include the sinking of the Titanic in your story. If you are writing about the medieval times, include events that happened back then to keep your story alive and real to the readers. If you love the Bronte sisters, read their novels to find historical facts. They lived in that era and wrote stories in their present that made the readers hang onto every word. This is also true of Charles Dickens and other authors who lived back then and wrote stories. Before stories were written down, stories have been told around the camp fires and flourished the minds of the listeners who later wrote these stories to captivate others. Isn't it great that we have had writers around for ever? The first book written was the Bible and it's still the best book of all time! I'm sure we are all so happy our ancestors shared their stories with their children, grand children and etc.

Here are some guidelines to keep in mind while writing a historical fiction novel:

1. Choose a time period and story that readers and publishers will love. Go with a idea, do your research and put your imagination to work,

2. BE SURE YOUR FICTION HISTORICAL FICTION FACTS are accurate. Double check the internet, books, musuems, etc. In other words, do your homework!

3. You may decide to write a time travel novel. The present meets the past. The characters can exchange culture ideas. I wrote a romance novel where the main charcater went back into the past by pirate ship and told the Lord of the Manor about television sets, movies and etc as they fell in love. I loved writing this novel.

4. Include historical events into your story as we said earlier.

5. Develop characters whose thoughts and actions are people you would love to have as friends and love to hate. The ones you love to hate make more for exciting characters. I am soap opera addict!!

6. Edit, revise and polish your historical fiction novel. Get the facts. It doesn't have to be just the facts like on DRAGNET but for Heaven's sake have the facts straight as you interweave your fictional story with charcaters and history.

7.LOVE WHAT YOU'RE WRITING!

Angel and I hope you have enjoyed this newsletter. If you have any ideas for the next newsletter or something to add this one, please send Angel or me an e-mail.Enjoy your summer. See you in August. Love and Hugs: Megan and Angel

The beautiful sigs are done by Angel of course! Thanks, girlfriend!
