Spring and Summer Rentals (bugs included)
Joe and Dee had already settled in, when the phone rang. As they both headed into the bright yellow kitchen, Joe spoke up. "Here's where Mr. Fletcher is going to tell us no booze while we stay in his cabin." Dee picked up the phone, as Joe sat impatiently at the table. Joe could tell it was the Fletchers by the way she was sucking up to them, explaining how beautiful the cabin was and so on. "Yes, he is right here." Dee handed the phone to Joe. He covered the receiver. "Here it comes...don't get liquored up!" Joe remarked with sarcasm. "Hello Joe, glad you made it up there OK," Mr. Fletcher said. "There is one important thing I must tell you. At night you need to cover all the drains in the cabin. There are these bugs that come up through the drains at night. We have Rubbermaid stoppers under the kitchen sink. There will be no problem with the bugs, once you have them on." Mr. Fletcher assured him. "Bugs? Drains?" Joe asked in bewilderment. Now Dee sat down next to Joe, curious about what Mr. Fletcher had said. "What kind of bugs are we talking about?" Joe asked. "We had an exterminator out once and he said he had never seen these types before. He said they could be some kind of cross breed, between a scorpion and cockroach." "Scorpions!" Joe shouted. Dee's attention was on Joe. "The only time we had a problem was when the guest forgot to cover the drains. You cover the drains...no problems." Mr. Fletcher hung up before Joe could say anything. But Dee was all over him. "What is this about bugs, scorpions and drains...Joey?" Joe didn't want to freak Dee out or their vacation would be ruined. "It's no big deal, just some little bugs that crawl up and out the drains at night...but Mr. Fletcher has all these stoppers under the sink. We just put them on at night, take them off during the day." It being dusk, Dee went straight to the cabinet under the sink and came out with a small box with a motley group of red, purple, and yellow stoppers.. Joe grabbed two. "I'll put these in the bathroom." Joe walked into the bathroom and over to the shower, then stopped in his tracks. There were three long black shapes on the inside of the shower's glass door. "Shit" He muttered, not wanting Dee to hear. "Dee, I gotta use the bathroom, I'll be right out." Joe shouted. "Ok...hurry" Dee yelled back, nervously. Joe took off one of his boots and moved slowly to the shower stall. He placed his left hand in the boot and tapped the glass door. One of the black shapes fell and Joe could hear it scurrying on the tile floor. He gave another tap, but only the end of one of the bugs moved back and forth, slightly. This time he hit the door harder, making it shake and successfully knocking off the two black shapes. "Yeah...these bugs aren't so tough." Joe opened the shower door. Two of them must have made it back down the drain, as Joe could only see one left. It was already halfway through the drain opening. Joe was amazed how it flattened its oval-shaped body to squeeze through the small slatted opening. "Splat! Splat." came from behind him, followed by tiny tapping sounds. Joe swung around in terror, as he saw two hideous creatures on the bathroom floor. "Was that the plan? keep me busy at the shower while you make your way out from the sink?" Joe saw another black pincher claw, coming out from the sink. The black creature dropped and scattered over with the other two. Their front portion had a scorpion head with pincher claws, but the rest of the body looked like an oversized cockroach, except for the giant curved tail and stinger at it's end, which Joe was sure had to be poisonous. Then Joe noticed the transparent wings, and before he could think of anything, they came soaring at him. Joe screamed. He fell into the shower stall. One attached its claws to his chest, while the stinger came over the top of it's body and penetrated Joe's face. The other two landed on his right leg. Dee came in after she heard the commotion. She screamed, because she saw her husband laying in the shower trying to knock the creatures off his body, not only that but also because she saw the continuous flow of bugs dropping from the sink and scurrying off in all directions. "Get out Dee! Go to the bedroom and close the door." Joe screamed. She wanted to help, but couldn't get the courage to step inside. "Go now!" Joe yelled. He knocked the creatures off with the boot, and ran out of the bathroom. He left the door open in his panic. He opened the bedroom door, closed it behind him. "What are they?" Dee cried, as they embraced. "We're getting out of this cabin tonight!" Joe said. "Your face is all red," Dee remarked. "One of those bastards stung me...I feel a little dizzy, you may have to drive." "Sure, as long as we get out of here," Dee replied. "Here's the keys...we'll come back to pick up our stuff in the morning." They walk out into the hallway, when headlights of a vehicle shown through the front windows. "We're saved, Joey! We're saved!" Dee ran to the front door. That's when Joe noticed the plush green carpet in the living room, could no longer be seen. It was pulsating from wall to wall with the filthy black creatures. "Nooooooo, Deeeeeee!" Before she made it halfway to the door, some of the bugs flew up and wrapped themselves in her blonde hair. "Joey!" She screamed and veered to the right. She tried to scream again, but a swarm of bugs covered her face. She stumbled and collapsed right in the middle of the bug-infested floor. Joe screamed and ran into the kitchen. He saw Mr. Fletcher, with his horn-rimmed glasses, staring through the kitchen door window. "Open the door! Open the door!" Joe yelled. As Joe reached the door, he could see Mr. Fletcher's face. The face of a madman. He was holding the door shut from the opposite side. Joe's heart jumped into his throat when he saw the swarm of attackers entering the kitchen. He could see some of the killers still carrying pieces of Dee's bloodstained flesh in their pinchers. "Let me out, you son of a bitch!" Those were the last words Joe spoke, as the deadly insects engulfed him. Joe slid slowly down from the door. Mr. Fletcher looked into the window, watching the monsters devour Joe's body. "Supper is served, my hungry friends," remarked Mr. Fletcher, as saliva streamed out the corners of his mouth, and his eyes dancing with glee.
