What Do You Want for Your Birthday?
By Quizmo LaGrande All I ever wanted, Every birthday, Christmas asked, For years and years I quibbled, For years and years I hashed, And told them most precisely Just exactly what I need... A banjo or piano. Do you think they took much heed? No. So I’d get a knitted sweater, Beanie baby, or a scarf, A piece of jewelry I’ve no use for, Cologne like to make me b—. I told them most precisely Just exactly what I want, A piano or a banjo Just to play some Honky-tonk, Or a little bit of Bluegrass, In fact, dear, quite a lot, My fingers have been itching, On strings or keys they’d be quite hot! But no one took a bother, Or thought my wishes true. No one saw the reason; Another toy to go unused. For forty years the same retort, Through family, husbands, loves, Forty years I’d get no banjo, No keyboard to be hugged. “No room for a piano!” The old husband would expel, “And a banjo? Why a banjo, only idiots excel?” So, an idiot I am. A bit of bluegrass in my bones. Got rid of the "stone" husband And made my wishes known To one who happed into my life, One who told me from the start He’d get me a piano; And he did! God bless his heart! Then not too long thereafter, The banjo came to play. An offering, though simple, From the archives of eBay. Now everyday I pound and strum Everyday I howl and sing With my banjo or piano My life’s complete! And can’t complain. But... Now the question does arise Every birthday, Christmas heed, What like me for a present? "Love and music's, All I need!"
