Mommy Wears Pajamas on Saturdays
A Saturday in the life of someone special.

On Friday nights, mommy comes home from work and puts on her pajamas.

She cooks dinner and eats in the living room.

She watches some television and goes to bed.

On Saturdays, she sleeps in late.

She gets up but doesn’t get dressed
because mommy wears pajamas on Saturdays.

Warning me not to trip her, she carries the laundry downstairs, and sorts darks, lights, and whites.

We go back upstairs once a load is started
and mommy makes breakfast.

Eggs and bacon or maybe pancakes or French toast.

After breakfast, she goes back upstairs but she still doesn’t get dressed
because mommy wears pajamas on Saturdays.

She looks over her lesson plans and gets ready for the week ahead.

Maybe she grades some tests or answers her e-mail.

She might talk on the phone to friends or family

but she still doesn’t get dressed,
because mommy wears pajamas on Saturdays.

We put the laundry in the dryer and put another load in.

Then we eat lunch.

After lunch, we might take a nap

or answer more e-mails

or write a letter

or check the Yankees website

but mommy still doesn’t get dressed
because mommy wears pajamas on Saturdays.

We check the laundry again and put the last load in.

Then she reads a book or does some embroidery.

Right before dinner, she puts the last of the wet clothes in the dryer and takes the dry ones upstairs.

After dinner, she watches some television and maybe reads some more.

But she still hasn’t gotten dressed
because mommy wears pajamas on Saturdays.

When she’s ready we go upstairs to bed.

Mommy doesn’t have to change her clothes to get ready for bed but climbs right in.

I curl up in my spot next to her and close my eyes.

Mommy turns out the light so we can go to sleep.

She never got dressed today
because mommy wears pajamas on Saturdays.

Each break is supposed to be a new page in the book. I wrote this one day after joking with my sister that my cat, Murphy, was looking at me strangely because I had gotten dressed on a Saturday. The idea I have for illustrations is to hint about the cat but never show him until the end. For those of you interested, this is Murphy and I would want to use him for the pictures.
