Days Gone By

Ghostly laughter, trails of voices,
faces from my past drift by;
smells and sounds, familiar phantoms
swimming up behind my eyes.

Silent mem’ries, pleasant or not,
dredging up from deep within;
all is tinted unearthly rose,
all remains faintly dim.

Walking down the noisy hallway,
taking notes, and cutting class,
meeting friends for hasty lunches--
those four years just flew on past.

Remember all the rules we broke,
thinking we were each unique?
Remember all the phone calls made,
to hear what we were to think?

Alone again with just my thoughts,
footfalls ring through empty halls;
not the person once envisioned--
stronger than I e’er recall.
