Writer's Circle Newsletter

Issue #151 November 29

(To read back issues of the Writer's Circle Newsletter, see WC Newsletter Back Issues.)

Let's Talk

"Hi."
"Hi."
"What are you doing?"
"Nothing. You?"
"Nothing."

What did you feel when you read this dialog? Nothing? Apathetic? You wouldn't be very interested in these characters, would you? I wouldn't.
Let's try again:

"Yo!"
"Howdy."
"What's up?"
"The price of beef. How 'bout you?"
"Nothin', man, nothin'."

Did that perk your interest? Now we know we have two people of different backgrounds. They have their own unique ways of expression. The reader would be interested to find out why these characters are speaking to one another in a familiar manner.

Dialog can add life and interest to your characters. Listen to those around you. People do not talk alike. A cowboy will not speak like someone with street smarts. Teens often have a language all their own.*Smile*

Make your characters interesting by giving them words unique to them. Are they from Texas? Georgia? New York? Another country? Show your readers these things in dialog.

What a character says and how they say it, will give your readers insight to your characters' personalities. Try it! It may be more fun than you think!
