Lost In Guilt

The night is still young, but already she is there,
holding down her regular seat at the end of the bar.
Each night she comes, seeking relief from her despair,
numbing her mind and, from reality, escaping far.

In booze and the comforting arms of strange men,
she seeks to forget the tragedy that haunts her.
Once happily married, her joy became complete when
they had a baby, a son – oh, it’s too painful to remember!

“Hit me again, Joe, and make it a double.” Drink does so
keep the demons at bay…The baby was six months old;
she was carrying him on her hip – she still doesn’t know
how it happened. He lurched, fell; now lies dead and cold.

His death was an unfortunate accident, everyone all agreed.
Friends, family said she couldn’t help it, she wasn’t to blame.
But her husband shunned her, withdrew in her time of need,
saying their boy died because of her actions all the same.

Their marriage ended, and guilt became her only companion.
Now she frequents bars to find some happiness in any man
who will have her and for that night become her champion.
Deliverance lies in forgiving herself…if only someday she can.

Thus, she sits, drink in hand, surveying the men in the room,
selecting her next distraction, guilt compelling her toward doom.
