SOUL’S DARK PLIGHT

By

David McClain

Deep and dark within his soul pain gnaws at him,

To his friends he smiles, and says hello.

In the secret places of his heart sorrow claws at him,

He laughs aloud and tells a joke.

In his mind he is overcome by scenes of happiness denied him,

He goes about his daily life and softly whistles a tune.

His soul and heart cry out in anguish and he aches for one moment of love.

He sits at home and is a father to his children, helping each of them to grow.

Late at night and in bed, the soul’s pain finally wins.

The sorrow of the ravaged heart overcomes all of his walls,

And slowly, ever slowly a tear, the blood of the soul, trickles down his cheek.

He sighs, and goes to sleep.
