She sits at the window, watching for her loved one.
She sees her husband in uniform, going off to war.
“I love you, Charlie. Come back safely when it’s done.”
“Grandma, Charlie’s dead. He’s not with us anymore.”

She sits silently now, tears running down her cheeks.
Then she smiles, as she recognizes her daughter coming
up the walk. “Becky will be here soon.” As she speaks,
she turns toward the door. Now happy, she starts humming.

“Grandma, that lady wasn’t Momma. She can’t visit today.
She lives far away.” Her grandmother turns to her, saying,
“Becky, we need to finish your wedding plans without delay.
Everything should be perfect for how much we are paying.”

“The wedding WAS wonderful, Grandma, according to Momma.
It was thirty years ago. Can’t you remember?” “Now, Becky,
must you fight me about this? You make everything into a drama.
We need to agree on these things. The day will be here directly.”

A nursing home attendant enters to deliver her medicine at noon.
“How’s the visit going today? Your grandmother is lucky she has
a granddaughter who visits as often as you.” “I must leave soon.
Today is not one of her good days. Sometimes I feel I might as

“well not come visit her. She doesn’t even know who I am. Today
she thinks I am my mother back thirty years ago.” “Well, you know,
I figure that even tho’ she doesn’t recognize you, still in some way
she realizes there’s someone here to visit her with love to bestow.”

“It’s just I was my grandmother’s favorite grandchild growing up,
and it hurts that now she doesn’t know who I am. Plus seeing her
like this is hard…” She gives her grandmother a sip from her cup,
kisses her, whispers, “I’m here to honor the person you once were.”
