Ice Ages A thousand years ago The ice came. Drifting down from the north To cover the land. No warm face of the sun. No call of spring birds On the wind. Just peace; The peace of the dead. The sun cannot hide Forever, and the ice Receeded back to the north, Leaving bare patches, Earth open to the elements. Earth pale and vulnerable To the wind And rain. The rain of bitter tears. The earth feared. The tiny life stirring Just beneath the surface Trembled to be so open. But the sun smiled down. But the love warmed The soft earth And the heart, The heart began to beat once more.
