Dear Mr. Hassett:

No doubt you have received many letters, in protest, regarding question 62 submitted to the Wisconsin Conservation Congress for a proposal to make it legal to hunt collarless feral domesticated cats. I can’t believe that this is even an issue. I’m in awe that such a proposal to kill cats will be addressed on April 11, because Mr. Mark Smith of La Crosse, Wisconsin asserts that free roaming domesticated cats are killing birds.

This is preposterous, since hunters will also be shooting precious household cats that have slipped outside accidently or go outside instead of using a litter box, and most of them are collarless. Most pet owners do not put collars on their cats for fear that they will be hurt or hang themselves if their collars got caught on something. Some cats shed their collars on purpose. How are the hunters going to distinguish between free roaming feral domesticated cats and our beloved felines?

Since free roaming feral domesticated cats fend for themselves and hunt birds or rodents for food, that’s no reason to exterminate them by shooting them. They are only using their natural instinct to survive in the wild. It is the order of nature, and we shouldn’t interfere.

There are other methods of controlling the population of stray cats, and that’s through neutering and/or spaying the animals. Pet owners should be informed not to release their cats to the wild when they no longer wish to keep them. They should find another home for them or turn them over to an animal shelter, where they have a chance to be adopted by a family.

Please stop this madness and squash Mr. Smith’s proposal to declare feral domesticated cats as “unprotected species” before it even goes to the voting floor on April 11.

Thank you for listening.

Very truly yours,
