Athens The Gold Rose In My Heart
I started this last September in Athens. One of my favourite places on earth.

Dreamy beach, golden sand, a turquoise silky sea,
I am back in Greece and again I feel set free,
To express how I feel about this wonderful land,
And to share it with you and make you understand.
Athens is the gold rose that I keep in my heart,
I can't remember when this love affair did start,
But I always knew, I would love her till I die.
It's something I don't question, I never ask why?
I just accept that it will always be this way,
Thank God for giving me Athens to love today.

I wear a golden rose ring upon my finger,
When I see yellow roses I tend to linger,
They make me feel happy, I think always of you,
This great love of mine for Athens has seen me through
Some bad times, tinged with sadness, when I have felt cold,
When I've not valued anything silver or gold.
But when I return to Athens, in mainland Greece,
My heart feels so happy and my soul is at peace.
I sit, look at the mountains, the sand and the sea,
Again my mind is unfettered, released, set free.

I knew many years ago when I was a child,
And Greece I suspect was more beautiful and wild,
Perhaps not built up, as I find it is today,
No matter how it is I'd love it anyway.
How did I know when I had never read a book
About Greece or Athens? I didn't have a look
At the place I was falling in love with for life,
With a love that is as strong as being a wife.
Oh Athens we have been fifteen long years apart,
You are, always will be, the gold rose in my heart.
