A Place Called Home
By Doris Ruth Mackey

My Name is Trevor Mason.I'm watching the rear view screen as the blue/green ball called Earth grows smaller and smaller. I can't wait to get home. First I have to stop at the lunar base on the way to drop off supplies for the bio-lab, but then it's straight home to the Mars base.

I make these supply runs every now and then just to pay the bills. I don't want to spend more time on Earth than necessary. There is too much smog and too much noise. The Earthers are always yelling and fighting. All the while I'm on Earth, I try to stay away from the creatures, and of course, they don't want to have anything to do with planet-hoppers like me.

I've been making these trips since they built the lunar base. The lunar base started out with just one dome, that sheltered the laboratories and housing for the scientists. I loved it back then, it was so very peaceful and quiet. After a while, they opened the base to colonization, and it grew quickly. Now there are twenty large conjoined domes, and seven thousand colonists, everyone of them an Earther.

Would you believe, they now have shopping malls with food courts and movie theaters. They even built a sports arena. It was really funny watching them try to play baseball in that low gravity. They're going to have to write some new rules. They are trying so hard to make it just like Earth, that it make you wonder why they left in the first place.

I took it for as long as I could, then I moved to the new base on Mars.

Mars is a beautiful place. I love watching the sun rise and set over the red horizons. Ahh, it is so wonderfully peaceful and quiet there. Right now, there are only three connected domes, and a small group of scientists.

They say they are going to hold off opening the base to colonization. They have studies they want to do first. I hope they take their time. They let me live there, because I do their supply runs for them.

When the Earthers do come, I don't know what I'm going to do. If they don't open a new base somewhere, I'll probably spend a lot more time traveling between worlds and live in my ship as much as possible. Until then Mars is home sweet home.
