I CANNOT RETREAT—a sonnet
You are, my love, attracted by others, For me a thought or glance you cannot spare. You will soon be forsaken by lovers, Their love is not like mine, so pure and rare. You are now enamoured of their beauty, It will fade up when their skin is wrinkled. Love is, for my heart, a call of duty, My whole being is deep with your love sprinkled. Ask your heart if you can live without me. Can another love you just as I do? Of such desire I just cannot be free, That I may give myself fully to you. You are the one for whom my heart does beat. From your love I cannot ever retreat. M C Gupta Created: 9 April 2005
